The PSN Cup is a knockout-style (single elimination) tournament pitting Pirates fans against one another in hopes of landing the PSN Cup. The PSN Cup is named due to the fact that the tournament is based on Saturday Night Pirates games. Scores are based on the final stats, with the Cup being the ultimate prize for the person that survives the knockout tournament.
The tournament is very easy to get into you; all you have to do is submit four guesses based on combined totals of the two teams playing;
The first number is your guess for the combined shots on goal at the conclusion of the game
The second number is your guess for the combined goals scored at the conclusion of the game
The third number is your guess of when the first goal of the game will be scored (time and period)
The fourth number is your guess for the number of saves made by the Pirates goaltender at the conclusion of the game.
Your guesses will be pitted against those of your opponent. For each one you guess correctly (or are closest to) you will receive a point. If your guess ties your opponent, no points are awarded... Think of these three guesses as periods!
After the third guess (or periods, if you will) the points are tabulated and compared against those of your opponent; the person with the most points wins!
If you are tied after your third guess (i.e. the third period), the contest goes to overtime and the fourth guess comes into play. The person who is closest to the total, without going over, is deemed the winner! If you both go over to total, the person closest to the number wins.
If you win your match you will advance to the next round, which will occur at the next Saturday game for the Pirates. You will then need to submit four new guesses (new round, new guesses) as they do not carry over from round to round.
This continues until you are either defeated, or are the victorious person that is awarded the PSN Cup!
My goal is to turn this into a bi-seasonal contest every year, and will try to vary the formats and scoring systems to keep it different and fresh!
You can submit your guesses by email (hart_foundation_hq@yahoo.com), to me through PM, or in person at Section T, Row 1, Seat 14 (can't really miss me)... I will accept guesses up to the opening face-off of the contest...
I will have a display board tracking the results of the tournament; this will be made available at every Saturday night home game for the Portland Pirates... I will tabulate final scores at the conclusion of the game and will update the board accordingly for those interested in viewing the results...
The application process begins immediately until I leave the game on Sunday (probably well after the post-game skate)... There is no limit on the number of applicants, the more the merrier! On Tuesday the lottery process will begin to determine your place and position in the tourney...
The first round of the PSN Cup will be held on March 1st...
